Home

Last night I returned to my High School (although not the same building) to act as a sort-of Simon Cowell figure for their annual charity talent show. I quite like returning to my grass routes - it's always nice to 'give back' and all that. It was a very interesting night!

The night began with the judging panel entering to a very loud 'O Fortuna' from Carmina Burana (like in the X Factor), with all sorts of lighting effects and the two very energetic presenters introducing us. I was quite overwhelmed with the response I got after my announcement (and also secretly quite smug about the fact that I got the biggest/loudest cheer). I was pre-warned by a teacher that the students were both nervous and excited about the fact that I was judging - probably because I simply call a spade a f***ing shovel and tell it how it is - best way, I think.

As the night progressed, I was very aware that I was the judge the acts wanted to hear from, which again I was quite surprised at. My favourite moment was when I was giving a comment to a girl whom I thought was good, but felt she should visit a voice coach to prevent her sounding like she trained at the 'Britney Spears academy of singing'. It was received well by the contestant, but not by a parent in the audience who angrily roared "BULL SHIT" at the top of his voice and proceeded to argue with what I was saying. I found it very amusing - poor, sad, pushy parent.

It was great playing the 'celebrity' for an evening and the winning singer very much deserved the trophy. Although, I was equally impressed with the original composition by the girl who came runner-up. What a talented bunch of kids they have there! Maybe I'll see them on the stage...

Sounds like fun. Although I'm glad I've never met you on an audition panel!
